Strategy

The ability to develop effective strategy is founded on the ability to listen. Increasingly projects fail, not because of the technical knowledge behind them, but because they have failed to understand the problem in the first place.

At Happold Consulting, we help our clients focus on outcomes. What is the client trying to achieve? How will they know when we get there? What obstacles prevent them from realising their goal? What resources are available? By helping our clients establish a clear understanding of where they are going, we can identify and mitigate risks along the way, as well as find opportunities to improve the outcomes.

Our projects, like our clients, are from diverse and varied backgrounds. However, common to all is their focus on changing the built environment around them.

It is no secret that projects that have invested in significant planning – in both the physical and economic sense – during inception and concept development are more likely to perform better.

Be Mobility thumbnail

Today, cities face a number of challenges related to motorized transport such as congestion of city centres and environmental degradation. Taking into account these challenges and the rising number of car owners, individual car traffic seems insufficient for the urban challenges of the 21st century. Hence there is an urgent need to develop new mobility concepts that guarantee a high degree of individual mobility whilst facing the social, economic and environmental challenges of our future cities.

The Kama Tri-City region is one of the major industrial centres in Russia. It sits upon 30% of the world’s potash resources, a key fertiliser, and also holds metals, oil and gas reserves. Detroit’s economic and population decline, driven by changes in the US auto and wider manufacturing industry, is a globally recognized story - as are the social, employment and urban consequences for those who remain in the city. Less well known is the tangible economic resurgence that has already started in the city.: new New sectors of the economy are emerging that provide job opportunities for Detroiters and attract new residents to the city. This resurgence is fragile – it will happen against the backdrop of a continued fall in the population until at least 2020 and highly constrained city budgets. Reorganizing the city’s systems and healing the environment are critical to facilitating these changes. The city’s government, civic and business leaders, and its residents face big decisions regarding how best to respond to the challenge of providing more effective systems at reduced costs and an enhanced environment for the evolving city.
