The Metropolitan Development Strategy for the Ar’Riyadh Region (MEDSTAR) is the regulatory planning document governing Riyadh’s strategic development. Significant changes have been observed in the development of Riyadh since the preparation and implementation of the original MEDSTAR plan. These changes are most recognisable in its demographic profile and economic growth trajectories. This has resulted in, among other things, higher demands for social infrastructure and environmental controls.
Working in a true collaborative partnership with the client, we carried out a comprehensive review and update the existing planning guidelines, policies and initiatives. This plans focused on aspects of metropolitan development including urban structure, economic growth, environment, land use, utilities, transportation and urban management.
The published report, MEDSTAR 2030, included a number of new or amended policies for consideration and adoption by the High Commission to guide the future development of the capital.
Notably the plan focused on the importance of Riyadh as a national capital. The plan emphasised this role through the establishment of a national capital precinct as well as a number of wider open space and gateway initiatives. In addition, the plan incorporated the new Riyadh Metro system that will connect proposed new sub-centres throughout Riyadh to relieve pressure on the already congested highway networks.
