In 2006, the University of Madaba offered Happold Consulting a unique opportunity to set out the physical layout and environmental strategy for a new private university that would be truly physically, socially and environmentally sustainable. Happold Consulting developed principles for an urban layout and block typology which is at once environmentally efficient, and inspired by traditional east Mediterranean urbanism. Included were principles for phased site development and flexible site design to ensure an eventual fit into an expanding Madaba town over time. Alongside the principles, Happold Consulting developed a sustainability appraisal and framework plan integrating routes and connections, places, distribution of uses, response to environment, energy and resources strategy.
