Jeddah Without Slums

Today in Jeddah over one million people live in unplanned settlements covering an area of approximately 5,550 hectares. The Jeddah without Slums programme is a reclamation and prevention initiative aiming at integrating unplanned settlements and their population within the city.  Recognising the need to address the issue of informal settlements in a more proactive, holistic and farsighted fashion, the municipality of Jeddah requested that Happold Consulting develop a programme to address the problem.

Jeddah's Municipality's objectives for the programme include mitigation of health and security hazards posed by unplanned settlements through upgrading projects accompanied by social development support; reclaiming a number of strategic unplanned settlements occupied areas, especially in the city central and historic areas, and more generally, to improve overall living standards and social integration in the city.
