Project name
Addiriyah Historical District: Integrated Development Plan
Client
Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
The Addiriyah Historical District consists of a sensitive and historically important collection of mud-brick oasis villages on the outskirts of Riyadh. However, the physical condition of the villages is deteriorating and the area is in need of urban regeneration in both physical terms, and socioeconomically. The site also has significant potential to become a centre for Islamic tourism and culture and to catalyse local urban regeneration, but has suffered from a lack of active management, vision and preservation.
Happold Consulting was initially employed by the Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) to develop an Integrated Development Plan for the district, consisting of a Physical Masterplan, a Business and Investment Plan, and an Organisational Plan for the eventual delivery and management of the district. Subsequently, the team produced Planning Policy, Design Guidelines, and an online GIS-based tool for use by the local planning authority for development control as the project is rolled out. In addition, our on site team has facilitated coordination, master planning and project implementation for the development of the District and individual projects within it. In collaboration with local partners, Happold Consulting is also working to ensure the mud-walled town of Atturaif is designated a UNESCO world heritage site.
