Martin has a wealth of experience in the public sector, having worked in local government for 15 years prior to joining Buro Happold in 1996. Soon after joining Buro Happold, he was responsible for developing a partnership with the public sector which became a government Pathfinder project, and led the way for a subsequent programme.
In 2001 Martin was seconded to a senior part-time role with the then Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (now Communities and Local Government) in the Strategic Partnering Taskforce. There he provided strategic advice to local authorities looking to develop working relationships with the private sector, advising on procurements with values up to £1 billion.
Martin has been involved in a number of government and industry initiatives, and has produced guides on Best Value, Efficient Delivery of Local Services and Performance Management for organisations such as the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE).
He currently chairs the Local Government Sector Interest Group (SIG) for the ACE, is a member of the ACE Roads and Procurement SIGs, a member of the Institute of Highways &Transportation, Procurement and Delivery Board, a member of the industry body, Highways Efficiency Liaison Group (HELG) and Chairman of the HELG Visibility Group.
